I recently had the opportunity to ask Molly Sawyer some questions about her amazing journey as a ballerina. Molly is an incredible dancer, she graces the stage with incredible poise, elegance and grace. Her passion and dedication to ballet is unparalleled. Below are her responses.
Q1: When did you start ballet?
I started ballet at the age of 12 and a half
Q2: Where do you currently dance?
I am currently in my first year at The New Zealand School of Dance
Q3: How long have you been en pointe for?
I have been en pointe for about 4 years
Q4: What pointe shoes do you currently wear?
I am currently switching between Gaynor Mindens and Energetiks Sapphire
Q5: How did you first get involved in ballet?
Since the age of 4 I had always done jazz and lyrical and at the age of 11 mum took me to my first ballet ‘Swan Lake’ danced by the Australian Ballet and afterwards I just fell in love and I wanted to dance like the “princesses” on stage, my studio at the time didn’t have ballet so I had to move. Best decision of my life!!
Q6: What is your favourite variation?
My favourite variation at the moment is Grace Fairy from sleeping beauty
Q7: What company would you love to work for?
I would love to work for San Fransisco ballet or National ballet of Canada
Q8: Do you have a favourite memory/moment in ballet?
Yes my favourite memory would have to be dancing with the Russian Imperial Ballet – The Nutcracker
Q9: Who are your ballet roles models? Dancers that inspire you.
My inspiration, the person I have always looked up to is Misty Copeland
Q10: Best advice you’ve ever received from a teacher?
The best advice I’ve ever received would have to be “never ever forget how hard you’ve worked to get where you are, look back and take everything in, Every compliment, every critique and appreciate it. You are who you are because of your journey”
Q11: Classical or romantic tutu?
Definitely romantic tutu!!!
Q12: What do you like to do when you aren’t dancing (your free time)?
When I’m not dancing I’m either talking about dancing or in the Pilates studio strengthening but I absolutely love spending time with friends and going on walks to clear my head and appreciate everything that’s around me.
